Adult acne affects both men and women, sometimes well into their 40s. Over-the-counter treatments, however, are the same as for teenagers.

Adult acne affects a number of men and women, sometimes well into their 50s. According to the "International Journal of Cosmetic Science," there is an increase in the number of adult acne cases according to recent epidemiological studies and that the disease stays around longer than in previous generations, although the reasons for this are not clear. Just as with teens, adult acne can create social anxiety, a loss of confidence and even depression. For many adults, adult acne proves a major sense of embarrassment, and some people find themselves unable to leave the home. Over-the-counter cosmetics treatment is the same as well, using four medicated treatment cosmetics, sold under a variety of brand names.

Benzoyl peroxide

Considered the most effective of all over-the-counter active ingredients for fighting acne, benzoyl peroxide works to cleanse oils on the skin and kills pore acne. It also works to remove dead skins cells that clog the pores on your skin. Drawbacks, however, include causing dry skin, burning and irritation, and scaling. If you have sensitive skin, this ingredient may not work for you. Products that incorporate this ingredient include Neutrogena On-the-Spot, Clearasil, Oxy-10 and Fostex. These products vary in strength, ranging from 2.5-10% benzoyl peroxide.

Salicylic acid

This medication works to slow down the process of shedding skin cells inside your hair follicle, helping to mitigate clogged pores. It can break down whiteheads and blackheads. Drawbacks include mild stinging and skin irritation. Products that include this active ingredient are Stri-dex, Clearasil Clearstick, and Oxy Night Watch.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Examples include glycolic acid and lactic acid. These acids are used in over-the-counter acne products and amount to synthetic acids made from fruits high in sugar content. These acids medicate acne removing dead skin cells and reducing inflammation. Alpha hydroxy acids can help stimulate new skin growth, helping to reduce scarring related to acne. Products that use these ingredients include Decleor Alpha Morning Cream and Amlactin 12% Moisturizing Lotion.

Sulfur

This product is usually mixed with other ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide and works to remove dead skin cells. This helps that prevent clogged pores and cleanse oil from the skin. Sulfur may cause dry skin, and the ingredient can give an pungent odor. Clearasil Adult Care makes use of this ingredient.
